 The brief Information about Gori State University

  An Overview

  Gori State University is established in 1998 on the basis of the Gori State Economic-Humanitarian Institute which was arised  on the basis of the Gori State Pedagogical Institute and is an Educational Institution with wide profiles. The university is situated in the center of Shida Kartli. It is occupied in three buildings, has the branches in Borjomi and Kareli.

             The purpose of  Gori State University is to provide a standard curriculum development to students of Georgia. The goal of Gori State University is to train world-class professional specialists and teachers to serve the growing needs of the public and private sectors of the region. The academic program is designed to progress the development of the discipline of profiles and to train a new generation of academic specialists. It is hoped that GSU will expend and offer a full range of various education from undergraduate to doctoral programs. At the University are employed professors, readers, teachers and scientific workers, which contingent forms 390 professors and the student’s contingent forms greater than 3000 today.

Course of Study

 

Academic year at GSU is running from September to July. The curriculum is reviewed by the Advisory board of GSU.

   Today the GSU has a full-edged five-year undergraduate program as well as post-graduate scheme.

The GSU operates year-round and provides courier education on a both: undergraduate and levels for men and women of all ages and from all walks of life.

 

Library

Currently the library contains approximately more than 200 000 titles. In 1997 it is enhanced with modern economic literature which is purchased on the grant resources throughout the Eurasia Foundation. In 2000 it is enhanced with economic literature by the support of Open Society – Georgia Foundation.

  

International Information and Communication Center

Director: Dotsent, associated professor R. Mekvabidze   

 At GSU is established the International Information and Communication Center from 1997 with an Internet access site and computer class by support of “Eurasia Foundation “. Internet access and library is opened to the general public.

At the International Information and Communication Center has created and functions Econometrics Study Center from 1999 with the library and econometric’s software (STATA 6.0; EcoWiew) by support of the “ Open Society – Georgia Foundation”   and  NGO  “ Information and Social-Economic Problems Research Center”  using  technical basis of  ICIC.

Both the International Information and Communication and the Econometrics Study Center has been created on the basis of following grants:

1.     The grant was awarded through the Eurasia  Foundation’s first Economics Education Competition in Georgia for the project: “Library Enhancement for the study of Economics” in 1997 (Project Director: R. Mekvabidze);

2.     The grant was awarded through the Open Society Georgia  Foundation to project “For the modern studying of Econometrics”, in 1998 (Project Director: R. Mekvabidze);

3.     The grant was awarded through the “Open Society - Georgia Foundation” to project “ Creating Econometric Study Center” in 1999 (Project Director: R. Mekvabidze);

4.     The grant was awarded through the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs of the U.S. Department of State IATP Internet Grants Program to project “ Development of the Web Page “Gori and Gori Region”” in 2000 (Project Director: R. Mekvabidze);

5.     The grant was awarded through the U.S. Department of State to Project “ Creating Internet Resources Center on Gori and the Region” in 2000 (Project Director: R. Mekvabidze);

Conference activity

GSU regularly scheduled conferences (in spring every year). Some of presentations have focused on Introducing new disciplines.

Saero University of  Shida Kartli is functioning from 10 October 1991. With University also there are Lycee and College, which prepares specialists of secondary education. In 1991-97 with the University was functioning Engineer Center. The salary of pedagogical personal is 100-300 lari. The University’s medical service is free for students of the University and for their parents.

 

Tskinvali State Pedagogical Institute

 Tskinvali Pedagogical Institute is functioning from 1991 in Gori. The Institute is  from the Conflict zone of Samachablo and was placed  in one of the building of Gori Economic Institute (now Gori State University), where its pedagogical personal worked until 2000. From 2000 Institute is placed in Besiki st.

During 10 years the personal of Pedagogical Institute and number of its students increased.
