Education in Georgia has always been a question of major significance. In
olden times education was directed by the church. In 1906 on the initiative of
David the Builder a Georgian scientific-pedagogical and cultural-educational
school Gelati Academy was founded, where the King invited all the Georgian
men-of-letters. Gelati Academy was referred to as “the second Jerusalem”.
At
the same time another academy was opened in Kakheti – “Ikalto Academy”
Educational institutions founded in Gori:
In
1818 – One of the first theological school;
In
1830 – A region school. Later it was called a town school;
In
1876 – A pedagogical seminary with two departments: Christian and Moslem
in
1918- it was changed into a teacher-training college;
In
1877 – A two-class school for women, then it was changed into a progymnasium which
in 1910 was changed into a gymnasium;
In
1919 – A humanitarian college on the basis of girls’ and boys' gymnasium;
In
1926 – an agricultural college;
In 1926-27 there were three seven-year-schools a nine-year school, a pedagogical college, an agricultural college, a sewing school, there were 55 four-year schools in Gori region in all;
In 1935 - N. Baratashvili Pedagogical Institute was opened with 15 chairs, 33 labs, 3 sports grounds, a resort in New Kindghi (at the Black Sea coast), a students’ hostel;
In 1981-98 several changes were made and now it is called Gori State
University.
Nowadays there are 5 Institutions of higher education, 3 colleges, a pedagogical college, and 81 secondary schools: among them 13 secondary schools
are in Gori and 68 in the region.
