In
1935 on the initiative of academician Ivan Javahkishvili and the Georgian
government a state historical ethnographic museum was opened in Gori. It
was temporarily located in the former catholic father’s residence on condition
that later an appropriate building could be found. The above building belongs
to XVII century.
There was more than 48100 exhibits in the museum.
Since
1937 according to the research many exhibits characteristic of ancient
Georgian culture and social life have been discovered, certain part of
which is unique all over the world.
More
than 100000 museum exhibits and scientific subsidiary material have been
added for 65 years, which due to the lack of place are kept in the fund,
such as: archaeological, ethnographic, numismatic, epigraphic, heraldic,
ancient palebotanic, chisel work materials. The farming materials belongingto
early Bronze Age prove that Old Georgian had a great experience of wheat
and vine-growing.
Wheat samples, ploughing and cattle-breeding materials kept in the museum prove that 5000 years age Georgia had a strong economic position. There are Georgian manuscripts and charters also literary heritage and documentary archiv materials dating back to IX-X-XI centuries. The museum also contains materials representing Georgian culture, musuc, minor architecture, heraldy, polychromic, wall-painting, cattle-breading metalwork, theater which give us idea of possible cultural relationships between Georgian and Asia minor…

The
museum is located in the center of Gori, near the antique acropolis Gori
fortress at the confluence of the river Mtkvari and Liakhvi.
The
museum, Salin’s house and carriage have always attracted a great number
of visitors. Protective Pavilion was constructed (architect A. Naprintsev)
over Stalin’s house, in which Stalin’s house-museum was on November 10,1937.
The museum, which is a two storeyed building, is at the same time the masterpiece of Georgian architecture of the 20 Th century (architect A. Kurdiani). The facades of the museums are decorated with beautiful Georgian ornaments.
Museum of Jacob Gogebashvili

Every year in October a very important holiday “Iakoboba” is celebrated in the village of Variani. In 2000 the holiday was dedicated to the 160th birth anniversary of Jacob Gogebashvili.

There is a two-story lime building with an open balcony, of Jacob Gogebashvili in the center of Variani to the left of Gori-Nikizi road. In 1958 the museum of Jacob Gogebashvili, a teacher, children’s writer, social figure, author of the first Georgian text-book “Deda Ena” (mother tongue) was opened. The museum consists of three halls.


The
pictures, exhibits in the first hall describe the childhood, adolescence
and pedagogical career of the writer.
In the second hall are exhibited the books published by Jacob Gogebashvili and pictures on the compositions making of writer . In the third hall are presented personal subjects of writer.
