In 1894 Zakaria Edilashvili a writer and public figure publishes a letter
in the newspaper “Iveria”concerning the necessity of opening a library in
Gori. In spite of great efforts this idea failed to be realized.
In 1911 Arsen Kalandadze the owner of a bookshop and a printing house
opened the first library in Gori. Readers had to pay 30 kopeks to borrow books
from the library.
In 1913 a reading-hall free of charge was opened by the “Society for
the Extension of Literacy among Georgians” which later was converted into a
library.
In
1968 after changing the location for several times, the library was housed in D.
Amilakhvari Street No 24, and is
functioning with the status of central library, with departments: bibliography,
complete and processing.
In 1949 a regional library was opened and in 1952 there followed a
regional children’s library. At the same time libraries are opened in the
villages of Gori district.
In 1972 the libraries are centralized. At that time 13 libraries were
funetroning in the town with 175000 books. The number of libraries and books are
increased every year.
In 1991 all the regional and city libraries were united. The library
system had to face certain difficulties due to political and economic situations
and also earthquakes. Gori region was in the conflict area, which brought over
robberies of the property of some libraries. Besides that in keeping with the
state provision part of the staff of the libraries became redundant.
In 1992 there were 14 libraries in the town and 86 in the region. The
number of books totaled 889277.
In 1992 the number of libraries was reduced by 38 units and the fund of
books by 274595.
This
table describes the dynamics of the development of the system of libraries in
Gori and its region.
